Brief Introduction
|
This station was established in 1901and at that time, the station was just a wooden structure. Later on, because of the growing prosperity of Chiayi City streets, the origin station became too narrow and inconvenient for use; therefore, the reconstruction of the train station was commenced. The station still existing today was completed in 1933 using steel framed or steel bar reinforced concrete construction and the architectural style is the so-called “the transitional style” or “ modern compromising style.”

◆ At the end of WWII, Chiayi Station was air attacked by American military and the bomb fell at the outskirt of station right flank. The platform booth and part of station main body were damaged. After Taiwan was restored, the renovation was then completed in 1949. Chiayi Station was once a great station for cargo and passenger transportation gathering Taiwan Rail, Forest Rail and Sugar Rail all in one place. In order to conform to local development, constructing the rear station was planed and then it was commenced for operation in 1992.

◆ The station structure style was the compromising architecture made of steel-framed reinforced concrete structure. The symmetric method of classical style, simplified mountain wall, decoration of geometric figures and the modern sense of horizontal simplicity all compromised and existed in this building. It was also quite unique that the platform booth was constructed using the same “工” shape of frames as the rail tracks. In 1998, Chiayi City Government concluded it as the City Historical Site.
