In 1898, Japanese government laid the railway from Tainan prefecture to Kaohsiung Dakao and it was commenced for one-track operation on Nov. 29 the same year with the station named “Akungtien Post”.  In 1920, it was changed to “Gangshan Post” along with the change of place name.  It was again changed to Gangshan Station after restoration after now.

The old Gangshan train station has almost close to 100 years of history and is one of the old stations in Taiwan.  The whole station was built with Taiwanese China firs that are worth keeping.  A lot of locals strived to preserve this place as a historical site and Kaohsiung County Government also complied with all efforts; through many discussions, they decided to move it to the Culture Park at Gangshan County Culture Center.  Unfortunately, at 1:10 am on Nov. 3 1995, a cruel fire burnt all this place, only sorry left for the moving plan.  It also burnt off numerous Gangshan residents’ wonderful memories about this treasure land with great historical meanings and only endless sighs left behind.

Shoutian (longevity) Palace Mazu (Mother Goddess) Temple
It is nest to Jhongshan Park and the most famous temple in Gangshan.  In Kangsi 51st year Qing Dynasty, the followers split Holy Mother’s spirit from Tainan Tianhou Palace, it was first resided at the fork of Pinghe Rd. and Weiren Rd, which was also the center of Akungtien St. in the old time.  In the early days, it was where those merchants and travelers’ beliefs relied on in Gangshan area.  Until Japanese ruled under the name of street planning and river constructions, they moved it to the present location, their original tendency was to destroy the traditional beliefs.  Therefore, one can still see a pair of stone lions different from all the Taiwanese traditional temples in front of the Shoutian Palace Front Hall.  These two fatuously smiling stone lions are exactly the traces of Japanese temples; the decorated doorway at the entrance of Jhongshan Park is the gate of Japanese temples.

Jhong (central) Street
Gangshan Township is the most important town between Tainan and Kaohsiung and the main consuming area for nearby villages; therefore, one can see the mini-size of town development in Taiwan.  Before Gangshan train station was moved to the east, Pinghe Rd of Gangshan, what-was-so-called Jie (street), no doubt was the most prosperous zone in Gangshan area.  Along with the old train station destroyed by fierce fire and the development of outer-circle roads, the importance of Jhong St. was relatively decreased.  However, Jhong St. that was once crowded with people and transportations still preserves irreplaceable traces of prosperity.
The most outstanding ones are many western buildings, traditional shops during Japanese rule or you can just turn to any small lane, then you can discover numerous surprises.

2/28 Peace Park
Along with Gangshan train station and the completion of east-moving project, Jhuwei Village was relatively developed and got rid of the frontier position in the past.  In 1992, in order to commemorate the day of Taiwanese sufferings, the county government then selected this place to build 2/28 Peace Park.  The development of Peace Park is not only just to promote the local living environment, but the most important of all, it symbolizes that we are brave to face the historical pain so as to pray for peace.

Gangshan Scenic Area
The Great Gangshan’s elevation is not even 400 m above the sea level but it is still like a big boat standing in Gangshan Plain.  Before the Hans came to develop, this place was already a famous scenic area because of its trees and Jhaofong evening bell.

Akungtien Dam
Akungtien River is the water of life in Gangshan, where population gathered around this water resource.  Akungtien had been polluted in recent years and the scenery was no more.  In 1942,  Japanese had built a dirt-rock dam at the southeastern foot of the small hillock to block water of Akungtien River that contributed Akungtien to become the main water resource in this area.  This project postponed due to wars and it was not completed until 1952; that is, the present Akungtien Dam we see.

Gangshan Hot Spring
The Great Gangshan Hot Spring was once called Gangshantou Hot Spring, located at the north foot of the Great Gangshan, the south to Erren River.  It is naturally beautiful scenery with elegant environment and undulate mountains and valleys.  This place is also the mouth that Erren River out of mountain.  The hot spring water runs out among rocks, it is a low-temperature mineral spring, 18-degree C. in the summer and 21 C. in winter.  The quality of the spring is mild carbonate spring; transparent, no color with a little bit sulfur smell.  It can be used for bathing if heated up.  It was said that it has the abilities to cure skin diseases and enhance a healthier body.
