Brief Introduction
|
In 1886, Taiwan,s governor Liu Ming-chuan pleaded the Ching government for the construction of Taipei-Hsinchu Railway, due to the inconvenient traffic and the importance of railways to national defense and economic development. In 1887, the construction started and was opened in 1893. It started operations in November in the same year. That time, there were only six trains everyday, with an average daily turnover of approximately 400 passengers. The ticket window of the Hsinchu Train Station near the military police troops (at the side of Tung Ta Road in Gongyuan Village) was the earliest Hsinchu station. During the beginning of the Japanese occupation era, the station was out of service due to wars and started operations on July 5 1896. The station was then renovated to the north side of the intersection of Tung Ta Road and the railways. In other words, near the cargo terminal nowadays. It was called “Hsinchu Stop” during the Japanese occupation era, occupying an area of approximately 44 pings. It was simple and crude, but it was the largest station of Taiwan Railways. The existing station building was completed on March 31 1913 and is a “senior” train station on the Western Line remained after the Japanese occupation era. The station building, the Office of Taiwan Governor-General and the museum inside the Taipei New Park are all built of Baroque style, featuring two-stage roofs with a great pitch. Together with an armor-shaped four-direction clock tower and a slender archway, Renaissance embossment is decorated inside the building, giving historical and artistic values. It is a landmark of Hsinchu City with special city scenery, and is the witness of Taiwan,s contemporary traffic.
