The construction of the North-Link Railway was started on December 25 1973. It was completed on February 1 1980, and then opened with its connection to the Yilan Line. It started the passenger and cargo transportation service, and this station formally started operations. After the Huatung Line had been completely expanded on June 28 1982, it completed its connection to the North-Link Railway, and then the Hualien Old Station was deactivated. Ever since, this station has developed into an all-purpose station comprising passenger and cargo transportation services, as well as organization and equipment functions.Passenger & Cargo Transportation Service: The average daily passenger throughput is approximately 6,000 persons, amounting to revenue of approximately NT$ 1.9 million. The average daily cargo throughput is approximately 290 to 530 metric tons, amounting to revenue of approximately NT$ 50,000.
