This station was barren during the reign of Chien Lung in the Ching Dynasty. During the 30th year in the reign of Chien Lung, Chang Zhou people from Fujian Province recruited people to go there and develop this place, which was called Jian Tzu Li that time. During the 50th year in the reign of Chien Lung, Tamshui and Hsinchu were set up. As Jhongli was located in the center of these two counties, it was renamed Jhongli, which became a traffic hub. During the 19th year in the reign of Kuang Hsu, railways were built between Taipei and Hsinchu. In addition, this station was set up and became the origin of Jhongli Station. After the end of the Sino-Japanese War of 1893, Taiwan was ceded to Japan. Therefore, the Japanese set up the Jhongli Station on July 5 1895 for transportation-related affairs. The station was made of wood that time. Due to the gradual prosperity and the insufficiency in using Japanese wooden stations in 1945, renovation was made with reinforced iron and cement station in 1950. This building is the first train station renovated by Taiwan Railway Administration after the Restoration of Taiwan. Due to rapid local development in 1970, the station facilities were not sufficient, and were thus renovated. The construction was completed in 1971.
