The Ghost Festival is a major festival of Keelung City in the seventh lunar month. One to three days before the ceremony, lanterns are hung on the locations, including train stations, Ch'ing-an Temple, Main Altar, Cultural Center, etc. The lantern is made of hollow green bamboo stems with a large cypress end, giving a sense of “completeness” with a “good end.” Flags and lantern banners are hung on the green bamboo stems. The lantern is lofty because: (1) It is hoped that the gods high up in the heaven will come and enjoy the achievement with the people; (2) It is also hoped to attract the ghosts in the underworld to come there and share the food. Therefore, flags and lanterns for the Ghost Festival are hung on noticeable spots of major roads, train stations, and bus stops, to promote the festival to the people and enhance the spirit of the festival. The shrine of the Louda Temple for the ceremony symbolizes the godhood of Louda God. The Ghost Festival of Keelung, which has been continuously held for 150 years, has kept the lighting of lanterns on the altar on the twelfth day of the seventh lunar month, which is a major part of the ceremony. It symbolizes the brilliance and enhances the bustling atmosphere of the activity. The monumental archway around the main altar on the landmark of Jhongcheng Park is all lit up brilliantly, which symbolizes the climax of the Ghost Festival and also attracts the ghosts there to worship them.
