Miaoli Railway Station was established on May 25 1903. When Miaoli Station, Taipei Station, and Keelung Station were open, Miaoli Stop was completed and started operations. The stations were all made of wood. Till 1932, flyovers were reconstructed and repaired and were completed in the following year. In 1943, flyovers, warehouses, and platform covers were destroyed in air raids. In 1954, flyovers were repaired. Later, Mr. Smith, the American consultant of Taiwan Railway Administration disagreed about this, so the construction was suspended. Mr. Smith believed that when the northward and southward trains were parked near the train stations, passengers need not cross the railways. Therefore, flyovers need not be constructed. As a result of this, construction was suspended. Later, due to the great number of train schedules, sometimes they were northward and sometimes southward, thereby the parking of trains near the stations and affecting the train allocation of the entire railway line. Hence, the first platform was rebuilt in August 1955. Flyovers were torn down, and then the underground passages lead to the second platform, thereby the travelers safer and more convenient. Due to sharply increased business in 1971, the existing station area was unable to meet the daily business needs, so it was decided to tear down the original station. On the original site, a building was built of steel bars and concrete, occupying an area of 715.6 sq. m. The construction started on October 1 1972 and completed in April 1973. Then in 1978, the second floor and station front were reconstructed, and then were renovated into the current aluminum baking paint board station front in 1997.
