To date, Taichung Station was renovated in 1908 and was completed in March 1917. It was built in a post-Renaissance architectural style. In 1949, due to an increase of passengers, the left side of the station was expanded. This station building was made of reddish brown bricks, supplemented by white stones. The roof is short and tilts at a sharp angle, with the center having an upright roof and magnificent medals on the top. Square-shaped double columns extend downwards from the two ends of the walls, with alternate bands of red and white strips, similar to the architectural style for the President House.

On the second floor of the station, there are continuous arc-shaped windows, with the vaults on the arc-shaped windows serving as frames for eaves. Turrets on the two sides of the building adjust the monotony of the roof. The greatest feature of the station is the pointed clock tower in the center of the walls, making the station more magnificent, with an artistic taste. The towering design of the waiting hall inside the station, together with the refined sculpture and hallways and pillars and arch-shaped crossbeams, fully shows the attempt and the impressive styles the Japanese people made for Taichung Station as the gateway of the central Taiwan.

>> The Twenty Scenic Spots of Taichung City —Taichung Rear Station
According to the studies conducted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government in September 2001, Taichung Rear Station was evaluated to be one of the 20 scenic spots in Taichung City. Since then, the historical architecture, “Wufentzuche Station,” has been kept till now.

In recent years, ‘Railway Culture” has stirred up a trend of nostalgia for the past. In the early years, there was a station called “Wufentzuche Station” in the eastern part of Taichung City. After the flood of 1958, the wufentzuche no longer drove on the road and operated, so it became the Taichung rear station of Taiwan Railway.

>> Warehouse No. 20
This warehouse was built in 1930’s during the Japanese occupation. In fact, Warehouse No. 20 refers to the seven linked cargo warehouses No. 20 to No. 26 of Taiwan Railway inside the Taichung railway station. To fill new life and culture to railways, warehouses were then renovated into arts halls, which were then open on June 9 2000. Then, Warehouse No. 20 has been sued for reception, exhibitions, interdisciplinary arts and culture activities, office and recreational sites. In addition, main exhibition halls have been set up to regularly plan and organize a variety of exhibitions. There is a 25-ping-large café in Warehouse No. 20, where you can look at the platform of Taichung Railway Station at a close distance, thereby forming an interesting visual interaction of waiting travelers and trains.
