Brief Introduction
|

Construction on this station was completed on November 29, 1900, which commenced operations immediately. At the time the North-south link Line was constructed from the far most northern tip to the far most southern tip so the operation only went to Kaohsiung. The year after, lines connected to Shanhua in May. On initial erection, the station office was extremely narrow and humble. In 1905, because of prosperous business developments, part of the station was rebuilt using wood. In 1927, the laying of double tracks commenced servicing Tainan to Kaohsiung and in 1933 started operations. The station was a double story structure constructed in three parts. The front lobby which, faces the west, the center waiting room and platform at the rear of the station facing east. Easy access for vehicle travelers into the lobby is provided with pedestrian two walkways on both side from the parking lot to the entrance door. The second floor is accessible from the main lobby’s first floor. A rail station restaurant is established on the second floor also acting as a hotel. At the time it was Tainan’s top-grade hotel. This was also the first rail station/hotel establishment in Taiwan. There were a total of 9 rooms. Also, at the time it was the only western style suite around in this city. Tainan City is the source of Taiwan and also the most relic city through out the province. In 1661, the Netherlanders were solemnly driven out and Taiwan was restored with the government headquarters established in Tainan. Afterwards, cultivation of the land and development was endeavored. Scores of people from Mainland China started to come over, merchant ships converged, shops started to emerge one right next to the other. The settlement of Tainan hence was officially underway. Until 1684, the Qing court established the Taiwan government headquarters in Tainan after it ruled over Taiwan. 》The New & Old Fucheng 400 years ago, because unbearable conditions, many after hearing about the beauty of Formosa left the country aside and headed for Taiwan in search for a piece of their dreams. Traveling over harsh waters and through perverse conditions and only the lucky ones finally arrived on the beautiful soil of Formosa-Tainan. Therefore, it became the source to fulfill the fore peoples’ dreams of Formosa and people called Tainan “Fucheng.” 》Machu making a tour The “welcoming Machu” has been carrying on tradition in Fucheng for a long time. This is the earliest place in paying attribute to Machu and her making a tour; the roads for attribute are over 300km round trip, covering what is currently Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung areas. Tainan Fucheng has become the center of the humane history and economical activities that derived. Taiwan Machu belief is the representative activity to promote local social and cultural development. 》The Place of Origin for Dragon Boat Contests According to LianHeng, the author of the book, “Tainan Relics” has stated, that the dragon boats contest can be traced back as early as 1764 during the Qing Dynasty Quianlong 29th year, 236 years ago. During that time, the contests were held at Nan Lake in front of Fahua Temple, during the Guangsu years this contest was moved to the 5 lane harbors up until 1926 when this tradition was continued on Tainan AnPing Canal- one of Taiwan 8 wonders. 》Worshiping Confucius Ceremony Every year, on the day of Confucius’s birthday, all Confucius temples through out Taiwan will hold the dawn ceremony; however, none of which can come close to comparing with the historical significance portrayed at the Confucius temple in Tainan. Reason being, Tainan’s Confucius temple is one of the earliest temples erected and even more was the place for the first Confucius ceremony held in Taiwan! 》Yi Dance Yi refers to the squad dance in ancient times. The “squad dance” was the dance used in rituals. According to the ancient ritual rules, emperors can use an eight-squad dance in the imperial ancestral temple, kings can use six-squad dance in the ancestral temples, senior officials can use four-squad dance and junior officials can use two-squad dance. Because Confucius was once conferred the title of King of Wensuan; therefore, the six-squad dance was used in the Confucius Ceremony. In a six-squad dance, there are six rows and six columns, with a total of 36 dancers. The only dance for worshipping kings and primers is wen. An eight-squad dance, there are eight rows and eight columns with a total of 64 dancers, is for worshipping the emperor’s ancestors and has 3 types of dances-wen, wu and mixed wen and wu dances.

》Chihkanlou / The Chamber of Red Hill YongLi Reign 7th year of Ming dynasty, in 1853, at the time when Taiwan was occupied by the Dutch whom built this “Pulouminjhe City” , The Han people called it “Chihkan”, “Fanzailo” or “Hongmaolo.” Chihkanlou is a structure full of style and elegance, distinguishable by layout. The structure is surrounded by the garden and there are various kinds of stone sculptures and tablets distributed in the garden and 9 of stone turtle tablets are the most famous. 》Confucius Temple The Confucius temple as a whole is simple and sober with an open style of architecture. The left for studying and the right for worship, rendering scholars distinguishing characteristics. Among the various Confucius temples situated around Taiwan, Tainan’s is the most attractive to people. Because of the numerous wars and natural disasters and aging of the temple, the current condition of the Confucius temple is the restored structure during Japanese rule. The total area is over 9,000 squared meters. There are 15 building total some small and some large. 》Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple The sacrificial rites martial temple is located in front of Chihkanlou, the martial god worshiped within this temple is Guangong-Guang Yu, and it is also called the Great Guan Emperor Temple, which is the only martial temple listed in official ceremonies. The martial temple has a long history, which was erected during the Ming dynasty. After continuous restoration, it turned out as the current layout we see today. After Taiwan regained territory, it was granted as the first-class historical site, then it was renovated again and it was completed in 1984. 》Wufei Temple/Temple of five Concubines Wufei temple was erected during Cianlong Reign 11th year of Qing Dynasty to commemorate the five concubines’ loyalty of Chug, Shu-quei, King of Ningjing in the Ming Dynasty. Wufei Temple was once just a simple tomb and no tablet was set until Qing Dynasty. The scales of Wufei Temple we see today were most rebuilt during Japanese rule and the last renovation was taken in 1977. Temple was the mansion that Jheng Jing erected for the residence of King of Ningjing coming to Taiwan. After Shih, Lang attacked and occupied Taiwan, he then changed the mansion to “Tianfei Temple,” showing that he was taking the credit of success; later Machu was promoted as Tianhou, then Tianhei Temple was changed to “Datianhou Temple” and became the first official worshiping temple in Taiwan. 》Erkunshen Fortress (Eternal Golden Castle) Erkunshen Fortress was erected of the bricks and stones demolished part of Relanjhe City by Shen, Bao-jhen during Guangsui reign in Qing Dynasty. The emplacement was installed and equipped with western cannons to make sure that no army boat berthed at the sea mouth. It was once desolated during Japanese rule. After restoration, it was listed as one of attractions and now the renovation was completed and it is a Class 1 Historical Site. 》Anping Fort The remains of Taiwan City was erected by the Dutch in Tianci 3rd year reign of Ming Dynasty and it was changed to “Relanjhe City” in Tianci 7th year reign of Ming Dynasty. It had been restored for many times and expanded its scale. The outer wall of Relanjhe City was totally completed in Chongjhen 7th year reign. The whole castle was erected by the mixtures of sweet-rice juice, syrup, sand and oyster-shell powder. The remains of the city wall, the roots of the old banyan trees are telling endless hardships and among them, the scale of Anping Fort has the most.
