On October 30 1893, Hsinchu station was opened. That time, a station was set up at a distance of about 2 miles form the north of “Yangmeili,” and it was called “Touchonghsi.” Till July 20 1899, Touchonghsi” was renamed Yangmeili and opened. On September 10 1920, it was renamed “Yangmei Stop.” Then on October 1 1929, the new station was set up around the Tacheng Township, and then relocated to its current location due to the change of routes. Later, the station building was renovated on a small-scale basis. Once the renovation has been completed, the station has kept at its current size. For all these years, the station features a red roof and a simple platform. The existing environment of the station can be said to be elegant. Although it is no longer crowded with passengers and goods as that in the past, its importance as an important station can still be recognized.

What you should know

As the folkways of the Hakka Zone are very simple, large-scale activities are irregularly organized annually in this town or in the front station, so as to enhance the cohesion among the people. Examples are: New Year Eve Party, lantern parade, and promotional activities on filing taxation have become a place for the people to mix with each other. Restricted by its landscape, the surrounding hill is shaped like a bamboo scoop, so it collects winds. In winter, it is windy in this station, so its temperature is lower than that of the surrounding regions. Therefore, the travelers who are waiting for the trains mostly hide themselves in the underground passage, and only come out once the trains arrive, thereby forming an interesting scene. In addition, starting from every April, “trailing arbutus” starts to blossom. Due to over development, it is difficult to see real trailing arbutus, not to mention the fresh arbutus fruits. Inside the station, there are several trailing arbutus trees. When the fruits are ripened, it tastes like mulberry. In addition, there are seeds inside, it gives a strong astringent taste, and so it is not intended for eating.
