Yilan City was called Jioucyong City in the early days since the Subcostate Crape Myrtle was planted everywhere on the top of city walls. It is also an economical, political, cultural, and educational city of Yilan County. Kavalan Government was set to in charge of all political administration of Jioucyong City in1812. Jioucyong City included city walls, a fosse, government offices, streets, and temples. During the Japanese colonized period, the city walls was torn down and modified to roads heading east, west, north, and south.
Now Yilan City is still an economical, political, cultural, and educational city of Yilan County. There are 63 temples and 11 churches in Yilan City. Temples hold festivals, religious parades, and other religious activities for safety. The most important 2 festivals are City God (Lord Cheng Huang) Festival on February 8 in Lunar Calendar and Lord Dong Yue Festival on March 28 in Lunar Calendar. Every year, 2 temples hold these festivals in rotation. The religious parades and other religious activities make the city very crowded and prosperous.
》Confucius Temple
Confucius Temple was built in 1868. The savants admired that Yilan Confucius Temple is as wonder as Da Chen Shrine in Taiwan. The construction structure was majestic and the curves were perfect. However, it was destroy by the bombing during the World War II. After World War II, it was rebuilt in outside of the North Gate and the old Da Chen Shrine was used as a model of the new one. After leaving the train station, you can right and walk along on Sinsing Road around 20 minutes to arrive to this majestic temple.
》Jhaoying Gong
Jhaoying Gong was built in 1808. It is the only Level 3 National Monument in Yilan County and located on the center of Old Yilan City. This temple was the place people worshiped Mazu Goddess. The entrance was facing the sea like other temples. However, it was modified and the entrance was facing the mountain. It becomes the only temple where people worshiped Mazu Goddess (she is a Sea Goddess) that the entrance is facing the mountain. After leaving the train station, you can turn right and walk along on Sinsing Road, and then turn left to Kangle Road. You keep going until you hit Jhongshan Road, and then turn right. Jhaoying Gong is within 50 meters.
》Yilan County Memorial Hall
Yilan County Memorial Hall was once the residence of high officials. It was built in 1906 with the area of 2644.56 square meters and a built-up area of 244.63 square meters. The building combines Japanese timber-structured style and ancient western style. After leaving the train station, you walk straight on Guangfu Road and turn to Jhongshan Road. You can arrive here in 15 minutes.
》Yilan Winery Museum
There is a long history of Ilan Wine Factory. It was built in 1910 and went through Japanese colonized period and the exclusive possession of the trade period. Now it is Ilan Wine Factory which was rebuilt from an old warehouse. Thus, you can see the old fashion features on it.
