Except in Italy, there is not a cold spring as rare as Su-ao Cold Springs in Southeast Asia. Some said that people who lived in Su-ao Area believed that the cold springs contented toxic substances in early days. Until Japanese colonized period (1895), Mr. Nobukage Takenaka, a Japanese soldier, was on a military operation. He was thirsty when he was walking near to the foot of Cising Mountain. He found a cold spring and drank the spring water. After that, he felt very comfortable and was curious about it. However, the locals believed that the cold springs contented toxic substances and were afraid to be near to them since they found crickets and earthworms dead in the cold spring.

After Mr. Nobukage Takenaka retired from the military service, he settled down in Su-ao and started to investigate the substances of Su-ao Cold Springs. The result is that the cold springs are not toxic and can be made as cold soft drinks.

Before Nobukage Takenaka, Mr. Kabayama, the first General Governor of Taiwan, was on a trip of exploring Nan-ao Township and took a bath in Su-ao Cold Springs in 1872. He felt nice and refreshing after using the spring water. However, people who lived in Su-ao Area believed that the cold springs contented toxic substances and were afraid to bath in them. Until Mr. Nobukage Takenaka bathed in a cold spring in front of the locals, they started to realize that the cold springs had some healing power. After analyzing the cold springs, there is more healing power had been found, and the locals are very proud of having Su-ao Cold Springs here.
